10 Ways To Use Stale Bread

In Humbleville, it’s important to never let anything go to waste.  This is crucial to learning how to live on little.

When the bread in your pantry starts to stale, don’t just throw it out or give it to the birds!  There’s lots of tasty tricks to resurrect your lame loaf!

Now if your bread is past the stale stage and has entered moldy city, please don’t eat it.  Thank you.

1.  French Toast

  • 6 slices of bread
  • 2 eggs
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Whisk ingredients together, dunk bread in mixture, and then throw ’em on a hot griddle!

2.  Breadcrumbs

  • stale bread slices (10 slices makes 2 cups of breadcrumbs)

Place bread slices directly on oven rack and bake at 250 degrees F for 30 mins.  Put toasted bread in food processor until fine.

3.  Croutons

  • 7 slices of stale bread
  • 2 tablespoons of melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt.

Brush bread slices with melted butter, then cut them into cubes.  with garlic salt and bake at 350 degrees F for 15 mins.

4.  Bruschetta

  • 10 slices of bread
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup mozzarella, diced of shredded
  • 6 plum tomatoes, diced
  • 2 teaspoons basil
  • 2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar

Mix all ingredients (except bread) together and spread evenly over bread slices.  Place in broiler for 2 minutes or until cheese is melted.

5.  Paninis

  • 4 slices of stale bread
  • 2 slices of Havarti cheese
  • 1/4 pound of your favorite deli meat.
  • desired condiments
  • 2 tablespoons butter (room temperature)

Butter one side of each slice of bread and layer with cheese, deli meat, and condiments.  Cook on a panini press or in a frying pan.

6.  French Onion Soup

  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 3 onions (thinly sliced)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 2 cans beef broth
  • 8 slices of swiss cheese
  • 4 slices of toasted bread

Cook butter, sugar and onions in saucepan for 10 mins.  Stir in flour, water, wine, and broth and simmer for 10 more mins.  Divide into 4 dishes, top with bread and cheese, and back at 425 degrees F for 10 final mins.

7.  Stuffing

  • 6 cups stale bread (cubed)
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 2 stalks of celery, thinly chopped
  • 1 tablespoon dried onion
  • 1 can chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 2 teaspoons chives
  • 1/4 cup golden raisins
  • 1/4 cup dried cranberries

Saute celery and dried onion in butter.  Add remaining ingredients, (except bread) and simmer for 10 minutes before mixing bread in.

8.  Meatloaf

  • 1 1/2 cups breadcrumbs
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 package onion soup mix
  • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons worcestershire sauce

Mix all ingredients together and place in a 9×5 inch loaf pan.  Bake at 350 degrees F for 1 hour.

9.  Bread Pudding

  • 10 slices of bread (cubed)
  • 4 tablespoons butter (melted)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 6 eggs
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 3 cups hot milk

Combine bread, butter, cinnamon, and raisins in baking dish.  Mix remaining ingredients and pour over bread.  Bake at 375 degrees F for 25 mins.

10.  Brown Betty

  • 10 slices of bread (cubed)
  • 3 apples (cored, peeled, and diced)
  • 8 tablespoons of butter (melted)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • pinch of salt

Place apples in a slow cooker.  Mix remaining ingredients and pour on top of the apples.  Cook on low for 3 hours.
